We all know diamonds are a girl’s best friends, and certainly there were a few envied glances at Princess Kate’s tiara during the Royal Wedding. If you’re looking for a timeless gift for your beloved, a diamond ring is a sure-fire winner. But delving into the world of the diamond ring is to risk becoming dazzled by the range of options available. What type of band should you choose? How many diamonds? Which cuts are the best?

A diamond, from the Greek word meaning ‘unbreakable’ or ‘untamed’, is a rare form of carbon. Formed under the pressure of intense geological forces beneath the Earth’s surface, the unique structure of a diamond gives rise to its renowned hardness, hence the phrase: ‘diamonds are forever’.
How is a diamond cut?

Before it can sit within a ring, a diamond has to be transformed from a rough stone into a faceted gem. This requires considerable skill precisely due to its hardness. In fact, some cuts can only be made by laser, or by using another diamond! The first guild of cutters and polishers hailed from Nuremberg, Germany as early as 1375, so the art of diamond cutting has a long history.
What are the different cuts?

The type of cut depends on a combination of market and physical factors: cutters try to satisfy the demands of current fashion while retaining as much weight as possible – where the ultimate value lies. In addition, certain stones can only be cut in specific ways, and these days diamonds are often scanned using 3-d computer software to determine how they can be cut. Great care has to be taken to cut the diamond in the correct way: an unsymmetrical cut can impair light reflection and devalue the stone. The ‘brilliant’ and ‘princess’ cuts are very popular at the moment, but are expensive due to their intricacy and popularity. Paved (or half-paved) diamond rings, where the band is set with several smaller diamonds, are also popular with many people.
Which type of diamond ring should I buy?

As with most worthwhile gifts, there’s no such thing as a ‘one size fits all’ solution (a princess-cut solitaire diamond is the nearest thing to a safe bet). You will need to pick a ring that will suit the recipient’s lifestyle and personal taste. An active city girl might prefer a simple, modern setting whereas a woman who likes to wear very feminine clothes might be happiest with a vintage, romantic style. Look at her wardrobe; see what other jewellery she wears. Even the most exquisite piece won’t work if there’s nothing that she can wear it with.

Finally, before you go out shopping for a diamond ring, it is advisable to be certain of the receiver’s ring size, but that may be a problem if you don’t want to let the cat out of the bag. To get around this, borrow one of her other rings or enlist the help of a discreet friend or relative. If unsuccessful, choose a metal that can be resized if necessary: gold is relatively malleable whereas platinum is difficult to reshape.
